The European Union (EU) is a group of democratic European countries, joined by the common goal of peace and prosperity. The members of the EU have assigned some of their power to joint bodies in order to ensure specific matters of joint interest can be made democratically, with the best interests of the EU as a whole in mind.

The European Union was initially created with the short term aim of ending wars and hostility in Europe, and to provide the foundation for future European economical and political integration (Dinan 2004. Based on the Schuman plan, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg these six countries signed a treaty to run their heavy industries, coal and steel under a common management (The European Coal and Steel Community).
