The story of the martyrdom of Thomas Becket on 29 December 1170, his canonisation in 1173, the burning of his cathedral – the very site of the archbishop’s murder – on 5 September 1174 and the rebuilding of the eastern end of Christ Church Canterbury over the following decade are events ineluctably intertwined which have been the subject of vigorous debate.
