Childhood obesity is rapidly becoming the crisis of the next generation. Nearly all public health officials express a major concern for the growing number of obese children in the United States. The obesity rate among children ages eight to twelve years has exponentially increased, quadrupling since the 1980’s (Small, Anderson, & Mazurek-Melnyk, 2007). This disturbing trend continues to grow in all states, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2007 a). The implication is alarming considering the fact that obese children are more than twice as likely to develop hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, depression, and a shortened life-span (Faith, Scanlon, Birch, Francis, & Sherry, 2004 b).

Parents Corporal Punishment

There has been controversy in Australia regarding whether parents should be allowed to use smacking or other forms of corporal punishment (corporal punishment) as a means of behavioural management of children. There have not only been concerns that corporal punishment can be harmful, but also relating to the effectiveness of such a punishment as a means of managing and changing children’s behaviour.
