Governments across the world use various forms of media to manipulate and control the masses. Public opinion in both democracies and authoritarian states is influenced by a range of propaganda methods utilised by government and the regimes that they control. This study examines the effects of media as a tool for regime control and largely adopts the theoretical stance of the Frankfurt School - that media serves as a tool for maintaining the position of those in power and subduing the masses through a culture industry that entertains yet stimulates little in the way of debate about the political, economic and social order.
