Australian population is ageing. It has been widely disseminated that the over-60s now outnumber the under 16s and this trend is set to continue. (MacKinlay, 2009) Increased average wealth, advances in medical science, better living conditions and the first 'baby boomers' reaching retirement all contribute to the growth in numbers of older people. Living longer is a fact to celebrate. However, people are not necessarily living these extra years in good health. Older men can now expect to live 6.9 years with a disability and older women 9.2 years. (Brown, 2004)
