Criminology Dissertation | Police Community Support Officers

"Police forces across England and Wales in 2002 have been provided with a new member of the police force to support police officers. These Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) were introduced in the Police Reform Act 2002 to address disorder, low level crime, high visible patrols, and public reassurance. This Act gave a list of limited standard and discretionary police powers to PCSOs. The role of the PCSO as an extended member of the police family links the community to the police, without all the powers typically associated with policing. This limitation has cast doubt over their effectiveness within the local community."

Zero Tolerance UK - Criminology Dissertation

In the UK, experiments with so-called ZTP have been limited to a few localized initiatives that have in practice adopted only elements of the New York approach. The Metropolitan Police in King’s Cross, London, undertook a vigorous campaign to ‘clean up’ the area by focusing as much on minor infractions and incivilities as on major crimes. One of their operations, entitled Operation Zero Tolerance, ran for six weeks in late 1996 and involved 25 police officers who were tasked ‘to clamp down on all crime in the area, however apparently trivial or irrelevant’ (‘The petty crime way’, Guardian 21 November 1996).

Incarceration Rates Populism

Since the mid-1970s onward, the vast majority of Western countries have experienced a significant plus continual rise in their incarceration rates, leading to the problem of overcrowded prisons. We examine the extent to which the ‘incarceration boom’ of many modern societies can be attributed to the phenomenon of penal populism.

Cybercrime Criminal Offence

At this point of time there is no commonly agreed definition of ‘Cybercrime’. The area of Cybercrime is very broad and the technical nature of the subject has made extremely difficult for authorities to come up with a precise definition of Cybercrime. The British police have defined Cybercrime as ‘use of any computer network for crime’ and council of Europe has defined Cybercrime as ‘any criminal offence against or with help of computer network.
