Expatriate compensation

The research on expatriate compensation has been scarce although many other aspects related to international transfers have been dealt with quite frequently (Briscoe, 1995: 128). Bonache and Fernandez (1997: 457) state that compensation is the aspect of expatriation which has received least attention (see also Suutari and Tornikoski, 2000). On the other hand, expatriate compensation is a complex issue both for individual expatriates and for international companies. Hamill (1989: 26) states that the compensation package is one of the most difficult elements in expatriate policy. The complexity is linked to the diversity of the goals, which should be taken into account in the development of international compensation policies and practices, as will be discussed later.
