Section 4 of the Statute of Frauds 1677 provides that, ‘no action shall be brought unless the agreement upon which such action shall be brought or some memorandum or note thereof shall be in writing and signed by the parties to be charged therewith or some other person thereunto by him lawfully authorised.’ This statute provides that an agreement dealing with sale of land in the UK must be in writing and signed/sealed by the contracting parties. The most important question now is whether computer generated agreements for disposition of land satisfies the dictates of the Statutes of frauds. According to Reed,[40] the difficulties arise here because in reality an electronic document is a series of numbers in the computer memory, and what is seen on the screen is a translation of the numbers on the computer after application of a coding convertion, into a form of words for the reader.
