Since the terrorist attacks on the United States by al-Qa'ida on 11 September, 2001, Muslim-Americans have been perceived with increasing suspicion and paranoia by the majority of the non-Muslim population. Though Islam proclaims to be a spiritual tradition centred on worship and 'submission' (islam) to the omnipotent, benevolent God of Abraham and Moses, many non-Muslim Westerners find this theological creed impossible to reconcile with the hostile behaviour of religious extremists undertaking suicide missions and mudering innocent civilians in the religion's name and for that very same Deity.
