Some humanists totally reject the idea of the spiritual because they view it as a purely religious concept. The government, Ofsted, QCA and others however have made clear that their intention when considering the provision for SMSC (spiritual, moral, social and cultural development) is that whatever "spiritual" means, it is inclusive; applying to all children whether from religious backgrounds or not. Others have sought common ground in various ways. Most of us would agree that we share a capacity for awe and wonder and can lay claim to an inner life. This and other common elements of the human experience are advanced as sufficient to arrive at some understanding of what the legal requirement "to provide for the development of spirituality" might mean in the educational context.
