Account for the success of the First Crusade

The first crusade was a military expedition by European Christians to regain the holy lands and occurred in 1095. It is viewed by contemporary historians and eye witnesses at the time as an unprecedented success and also as an incredibly important turning point in religious history, "The events of the crusade were so dramatic, its impact so colossal as to inspire countless generations, across nine centuries, to grapple with its history".
