There are at least three three different interpretations of the cold war: the liberal or realist view, the orthodox view, and the revisionist view. Each of these schools of thought has been recognized by its substantive historical judgments and by its historiographical premises. (Leigh, 101). Some critics (e.g. Maddox) consider these subdivisions simplistic and have introduced further elaborations, e.g. soft and hard revisionism. However, due to disagreements among scholars, only the chief categories have been generally adopted i.e. the revisionist school of thought and the non-revisionist (or establishment) school of thought. (Leigh, 102).
